Whisper of the Past: The Mystery That Found Me

Episode 10: The Abandoned Estate

Sana and Arham stood at the edge of the forest, gazing at the looming silhouette of the old estate. The once-grand mansion, now covered in ivy and overgrown plants, stood like a forgotten relic from the past. The air around them was thick with tension, and the cold wind sent a shiver down Sana’s spine.

“This place looks like it hasn’t seen life in decades,” Arham muttered, stepping forward onto the gravel path.

Sana nodded, her eyes scanning the eerie structure. “It’s hard to believe our fathers worked here. What were they involved in?”

The estate was massive, with its towering walls and cracked windows, but it felt abandoned, as if the very air inside was holding onto secrets. They moved cautiously up the steps to the entrance, the creaking sound of old wood breaking the silence.

Arham tried the front door, and to their surprise, it opened with ease. “Strange,” he muttered. “For a place this old, I expected it to be locked.”

Sana’s stomach twisted in nervousness, but she pushed her fears aside. They had come too far to turn back now.

Inside, the estate was dark, illuminated only by the dim light filtering through broken windows. Dust floated in the air, and the floorboards groaned under their weight as they walked deeper into the house.

“There must be something here,” Arham whispered, his voice barely audible in the heavy silence.

Sana scanned the grand hallway, her eyes catching a glimpse of faded portraits on the walls. They looked like the former owners of the estate—wealthy men in dark suits, their faces stern and cold.

“Look at this,” Arham said, pointing to one of the portraits. Sana stepped closer, her breath catching in her throat. The man in the portrait wasn’t just anyone.

“That’s… my father,” she whispered.

Arham’s eyes widened. “You’re sure?”

Sana nodded slowly. The resemblance was undeniable. Her father, younger and more serious than she remembered, was standing beside another man in the portrait—Arham’s father.

“They were here together,” Arham said, his voice tense. “But why? What were they doing?”

Sana’s mind raced as she stared at the painting. The more they uncovered, the deeper the mystery seemed to go. Her father had never mentioned anything about working in a place like this, and yet here was proof of it—right in front of her eyes.

“We need to keep looking,” she said, her voice steady. “There has to be more.”

They moved through the estate, exploring room after room, each one more decayed and forgotten than the last. Dust-covered furniture and shattered glass were all that remained of the once-opulent mansion.

In one of the rooms, they found a study with bookshelves lining the walls. Arham ran his fingers over the spines of old, leather-bound books.

“This place feels like it’s frozen in time,” he murmured.

Sana nodded, though her thoughts were elsewhere. Something about this place felt wrong. There was a heaviness in the air, as if the estate was hiding something more sinister.

Suddenly, Arham paused, his hand on a large, dusty book. “Wait… this one looks out of place.”

He pulled the book from the shelf, and with a loud click, a hidden door swung open, revealing a dark passageway behind the bookshelf.

Sana’s heart raced. “What is this?”

Arham shone a flashlight down the passageway, revealing a narrow staircase that seemed to descend deep into the estate.

“This must be it,” Arham said, his voice full of anticipation. “Whatever our fathers were hiding—it’s down there.”

Sana hesitated for a moment, fear prickling at the back of her mind. But she knew they couldn’t stop now. They had to find out the truth.

“Let’s go,” she said, her voice determined.

The staircase led them down into what appeared to be an underground chamber. The walls were cold and damp, and the air smelled of earth and decay. At the end of the hallway, they found a large metal door, its surface covered in rust.

Arham pushed it open, and they stepped into a large room filled with strange equipment and old files scattered across tables. The room was dark, but a single light bulb flickered weakly in the corner, casting eerie shadows on the walls.

Sana picked up one of the files, her hands shaking slightly. “These are… research papers. Experiments. What is this place?”

Arham moved to a desk, where a large, old computer sat, its screen dusty but still intact. He wiped the screen clean and powered it on, the ancient machine buzzing to life.

As the screen flickered on, an old video began to play. The footage showed two men in lab coats—Sana and Arham’s fathers—standing in the very room they were in now.

“They were conducting some kind of experiment,” Arham muttered, his eyes fixed on the screen.

In the video, their fathers were discussing something in hushed tones. The audio was crackly, but one word stood out clearly: “control.”

“They were trying to control something,” Sana said, her heart pounding in her chest. “But what?”

Suddenly, the screen went black, and a loud crash echoed through the chamber. Sana and Arham spun around, their hearts racing.

Someone was in the room with them.

Lesson: The truth is often hidden in the places we least expect, and uncovering it can lead to more danger than we ever imagined. But to move forward, we must face the darkness head-on.
