Whisper of the Past: The Mystery That Found Me

Episode 14: The Final Countdown

The car sped down the narrow, winding road, its tires kicking up gravel as Arham and Sana raced away from the abandoned lab. Inside the vehicle, the tension was thick, both of them trying to catch their breath. The small, metal box labeled Failsafe sat between them, its weight feeling heavier than ever.

“We’re running out of time,” Sana muttered, glancing nervously at the rearview mirror. “They’re not going to stop.”

Arham’s knuckles whitened as he gripped the steering wheel tighter. “I know. We have to figure out how to use this device—fast.”

Sana stared at the box. “The note said our fathers built this to destroy everything. But we don’t even know how it works.”

Arham’s eyes flicked toward the box. “Sameer might know. He was there when it was created. If anyone can help us understand, it’s him.”

Sana nodded. “Let’s call him.”

She fumbled for her phone and quickly dialed Sameer’s number. The phone rang once… twice… three times, but there was no answer.

“He’s not picking up,” Sana said, her anxiety rising.

“Try again,” Arham insisted.

She called again, but the same result—nothing.

“What if something’s happened to him?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Arham kept his eyes on the road but his tone softened. “We can’t think like that. He’s probably just being cautious.”

Suddenly, the hum of a car engine grew louder behind them. Sana glanced in the mirror again and her stomach dropped. A black SUV was approaching fast, its headlights glaring in the rearview mirror.

“They’ve found us!” she shouted.

Arham’s heart raced. “Hold on!”

He pressed the gas pedal harder, trying to outrun their pursuers, but the SUV was gaining speed. It swerved dangerously close, forcing them toward the edge of the road.

“They’re going to ram us off the road!” Sana cried, gripping the seat.

Arham yanked the wheel sharply, just barely avoiding the SUV’s first attempt. “We need to lose them,” he growled.

But the SUV was relentless. It bumped the back of their car, causing Sana to gasp as they veered off the road for a moment. Arham regained control, but it was clear they couldn’t outrun their attackers for long.

“We need to find a place to hide,” Sana said desperately.

“There’s a side road coming up,” Arham replied, scanning the road ahead. “Hang on!”

With a sudden turn, Arham swerved onto a dirt path leading into a thick forest. The SUV followed, but the narrow, tree-lined road made it harder for them to stay close.

“Let’s hope this buys us some time,” Arham muttered, weaving through the trees.

The road twisted and turned, but soon opened up into a clearing. In the distance, Sana spotted an old barn, its wooden structure worn but still standing.

“There!” she pointed.

Arham nodded and steered the car toward the barn, pulling it behind the structure just in time. They jumped out of the car and ran inside, hiding behind a stack of old crates.

The sound of the SUV’s engine grew closer, but it slowed as it reached the clearing. Sana and Arham held their breath as the vehicle idled for a moment, the men inside clearly searching for them. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the SUV drove past, continuing down the road.

Sana exhaled in relief, her body trembling from the adrenaline. “That was too close.”

Arham leaned against the crates, wiping sweat from his forehead. “We can’t keep doing this. We need a plan.”

Sana nodded, her mind racing. “But what if we can’t reach Sameer? We don’t even know where to start with this device.”

Arham stared at the box in his hands, frustration etched on his face. “There’s one other person who might know.”

Sana looked at him, confused. “Who?”

He hesitated for a moment. “My father’s old research partner—Dr. Malik.”

Sana’s eyes widened. “Dr. Malik? But I thought he disappeared years ago.”

Arham nodded. “He did. After the project collapsed, he went underground. But I have a feeling he’s still out there. If anyone knows how to activate this failsafe, it’s him.”

Sana frowned. “But how do we find him? We don’t even know where he is.”

Arham thought for a moment, then pulled out his phone. “I think I know someone who can help.”

He dialed a number and waited as the phone rang. A gruff voice answered on the other end. “Who’s this?”

“Imran,” Arham said, his voice firm. “It’s me, Arham. I need your help.”

There was a pause before the voice on the other end replied, “I heard you were in some trouble. What’s going on?”

“It’s a long story,” Arham said quickly. “But I need to find someone—Dr. Malik. Do you know where he is?”

Imran’s voice dropped to a low whisper. “Malik? That’s a dangerous name to be asking about. Why do you need him?”

Arham hesitated for a moment, glancing at Sana before replying. “He’s the only one who can help us stop what’s coming.”

There was another long pause. Finally, Imran spoke. “I’ll see what I can do. But be careful. If you’re looking for Malik, others will be looking for you.”

“Thank you,” Arham said, relief washing over him. “Just let me know as soon as you hear something.”

He hung up the phone and looked at Sana. “Imran’s going to help us track him down.”

Sana nodded, but there was a flicker of fear in her eyes. “Do you think Malik will even agree to help us?”

Arham sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. But he’s our only shot.”

They sat in silence for a few moments, the weight of everything pressing down on them. The device sat between them, its secrets still locked away. The enemies chasing them weren’t far behind, and the danger was only growing.

“We’ll find him,” Arham said finally, his voice filled with determination. “And when we do, we’ll end this once and for all.”

Sana nodded, a flicker of hope returning to her eyes. “We have to.”
