Episode 11:
Scene 1 – The Trap is Set
Kavita stood in the dimly lit interrogation room, her expression calm but calculated. Across from her, Ritika looked tense, her hands fidgeting with the edge of her scarf. Kavita took a deep breath, preparing to play her part.
Kavita: (smiling warmly) “Ritika, I have some good news for you.”
Ritika: (eyes widening) “Good news? What do you mean?”
Kavita: (nodding) “We’ve thoroughly investigated your claims, and it turns out you were right. Your information helped us corner Arvind. He confessed to everything. You’re free to go.”
Ritika: (stunned, her mouth slightly open) “R-really? I can leave?”
Kavita: (smiling reassuringly) “Yes. You’re no longer a suspect. Thank you for your help, Ritika. Because of you, we caught the real culprit, and he’ll be locked up for life.”
Ritika: (relieved, her lips curling into a smile) “Thank you, Inspector. You have no idea how much this means to me. You saved my life!”
Kavita: (standing up) “No, Ritika. You helped us save others. Now, go home and try to move on from all this. Take care of yourself.”
Ritika nodded, her face a mixture of joy and disbelief. She walked out of the station, her steps lighter than when she entered. As soon as she exited, Kavita picked up her phone and dialed her team.
Kavita: (on the phone) “She’s out. Stay on her, but keep your distance. No mistakes.”
Team Member: (on the other end) “Understood, ma’am. We’re on her.”
For two days, Ritika’s movements were uneventful. She stayed in her apartment, occasionally stepping out for groceries but nothing suspicious. The surveillance team maintained their patience, knowing that eventually, she’d make her move.
On the third evening, Ritika emerged from her building, dressed in a simple salwar kameez. Instead of heading to her car, she flagged down a taxi. The team, stationed discreetly, exchanged glances before tailing her.
Team Member: (on the radio) “She’s taken a taxi. Heading toward the eastern slums.”
Kavita: (responding) “Stay on her. Don’t let her spot you. I’m on my way.”
The taxi stopped in a crowded slum area. Ritika stepped out, her eyes scanning her surroundings nervously. She adjusted her scarf and walked through a narrow alley. The surveillance team followed at a safe distance, reporting every move.
Ritika stopped in front of a weathered wooden door, glanced around one last time, and knocked softly. The door creaked open, and she slipped inside. The team immediately updated Kavita.
Team Member: (urgently) “Ma’am, she’s entered a house in the slum. Sending you the location now.”
Kavita, Rohan, and Karan, already en route, exchanged determined looks. Rohan tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
Karan: (checking his weapon) “If her boyfriend’s in there, this might get messy.”
Kavita: (calmly) “We’ll handle it. Just make sure no one escapes.”
The trio arrived at the location, parking their vehicle a short distance away. They approached the house quietly, signaling the team to cover the exits. Kavita motioned for Karan to knock on the door.
As Karan knocked forcefully, a muffled commotion erupted inside. Ritika’s panicked voice could be heard yelling something indistinct. Without hesitation, Rohan kicked the door open, and the team stormed in.
Rohan: (yelling) “Police! Don’t move!”
Inside, Ritika stood frozen, her face pale. Beside her, a man in his late twenties, disheveled and panicked, clutched a small suitcase. It was her boyfriend.
Kavita: (stepping forward) “So, this is the boyfriend. And the mastermind behind the experiments, I presume?”
Ritika: (pleading) “I-I can explain! Please don’t hurt us!”
Karan: (scoffing) “Save it for the station. We’ve got enough evidence to put you both away for a long time.”
As the team secured Ritika and her boyfriend, Kavita looked around the small room, spotting several vials and documents scattered on a table. She signaled Rohan to collect everything as evidence.
Kavita: (to Ritika) “You thought you could outsmart us, didn’t you? But in the end, the truth always catches up.”
Rohan: (smirking) “Let’s see how your boyfriend handles this in custody. Maybe he’ll be as talkative as you were.”
The scene ended with Ritika and her boyfriend being escorted out, their secrets finally exposed. The team’s gamble had paid off, but they knew the real battle was just beginning.
Scene 2 – Ritika’s Confession
In the dimly lit interrogation room, Ritika sat across from Kavita, Rohan, and Karan. Her hands were cuffed, and her face was pale with fear. She avoided their piercing gazes, but the silence in the room was suffocating. Finally, Kavita spoke, her voice calm but firm.
Kavita: (leaning forward) “Enough games, Ritika. We know everything. Your boyfriend is in custody, and we have evidence. If you cooperate now, it might help your case.”
Ritika’s lips trembled. She hesitated, but the weight of her guilt was unbearable. Finally, she broke the silence.
Ritika: (voice cracking) “You don’t understand… I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”
Rohan: (coldly) “Then tell us everything. From the beginning. No lies this time.”
Ritika nodded, taking a deep breath as tears welled up in her eyes.
Ritika: “It started when I introduced my boyfriend, Varun, to Dr. Arvind. Varun was in college then, working on a project about gene editing. He was so passionate… so convincing. I trusted him completely.”
Kavita’s eyes narrowed, her tone sharp.
Kavita: “And you convinced Arvind to let him use the lab. But that wasn’t enough, was it?”
Ritika: (nodding) “No. At first, it was harmless. Just small experiments. But then Varun’s ambitions grew darker. He wanted to test his theories on living subjects. I didn’t know what he was planning until it was too late.”
Karan: (skeptically) “You didn’t know? You were the one bringing children to him, Ritika!”
Ritika: (crying) “I didn’t have a choice! He threatened me. Said if I didn’t help him, he’d ruin my life… expose secrets about me. I was scared!”
Rohan: (angrily) “So you chose to sacrifice innocent kids instead? You watched them suffer, Ritika!”
Ritika: (sobbing) “I thought… I thought it was temporary. He said he’d stop once he got the results he needed. But he never stopped. And then… that night happened.”
Kavita leaned forward, her voice softer but insistent.
Kavita: “What happened that night, Ritika?”
Ritika looked up, her face streaked with tears.
Ritika: “Dr. Arvind caught us. He overheard Varun talking to the team. When he confronted us, Varun panicked. He grabbed Arvind, started yelling. Arvind threatened to call the police, and Varun lost control. He told us to get rid of him… permanently. But then… the explosion…”
Karan: (sharply) “What about Arvind’s daughter? She died that night too.”
Ritika: (covering her face) “She wasn’t supposed to be there! I swear! She came looking for her father… and when the chemicals mixed… it was chaos. I tried to save her, but…”
Rohan slammed his fist on the table, his voice filled with rage.
Rohan: “But you didn’t. You saved yourself instead! And then you thought you could just walk away from it all, didn’t you?”
Ritika: (pleading) “I didn’t know what to do! Varun said we had to cover it up, make it look like an accident. He promised he’d take care of everything. I… I was trapped!”
Kavita exchanged a glance with Rohan and Karan, her voice cold as she addressed Ritika.
Kavita: (leaning forward, her tone direct) “How many team members were with you, Ritika? Name them.”
Ritika: (hesitant, her voice low) “There were five… Priya, Neha, Pooja, Maya, and Anjali.”
Kavita: (raising an eyebrow) “Sanjana wasn’t part of this?”
Ritika: (shaking her head) “No. I tried to convince her, but she refused. She said she wouldn’t be part of something so… so uncertain.”
Kavita: (leaning closer, voice sharp) “Uncertain? Or dangerous? Did Sanjana know what you were up to?”
Ritika: (fidgeting) “Not fully. She guessed it wasn’t right. She said… she didn’t trust me or my boyfriend. She thought we were hiding something, and she was right.”
Kavita: (intensely) “And the others? Priya, Neha, Pooja, Maya—did they know what they were walking into?”
Ritika: (nervously) “No. They thought it was just routine work, helping with experiments for… medical research. I told them we were developing something groundbreaking to help children.”
Kavita: (narrowing her eyes) “So you lied to them?”
Ritika: (defensively) “I had to! If they knew the truth, they’d have backed out like Sanjana did. I needed their help to make it work. I didn’t think it would get out of hand like this!”
Kavita: (coldly) “So, you tricked them into risking their lives without knowing the danger. What kind of person does that?”
Ritika: (desperately) “I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt! I thought I could control it… I thought it would work out.”
Kavita: (sternly) “And now, they’re all dead. Did you think about that, Ritika? Did you ever stop to consider what could go wrong?”
Ritika: (tears in her eyes) “No. I was too focused on proving myself to him, to… everyone. I thought I was helping him achieve something great.”
Rohan: (sternly) “And Varun? Did he plan to continue these experiments somewhere else?”
Ritika: (whispering) “He was working on something bigger. He said… he said this was just the beginning. That one day, people would see him as a genius.”
Karan scoffed, disgusted.
Karan: “A genius? He’s nothing but a monster. And so are you.”
Kavita stood up, her tone final.
Kavita: “It’s over, Ritika. Your lies, your games, everything. We’ve got all we need. Now, let the court decide your fate.”
Ritika lowered her head, defeated, as the officers prepared to take her away. The truth was out, but the damage she and Varun had caused would haunt them forever.
Scene 3: A Race Against Time
Rohan’s phone buzzes, breaking the tense silence after Ritika’s confession. He answers hurriedly.
Doctor: (urgent) “Inspector Rohan, this is Dr. Mehta from the hospital. Sanjana’s condition has worsened. The chemical poison has spread rapidly. If we don’t get an antidote soon, we won’t be able to save her.”
Rohan: (alarmed) “Antidote? How long do we have?”
Doctor: (gravely) “A few hours at most. Please, hurry.”
Rohan ends the call, his face hardening. He turns to Kavita and Karan.
Rohan: “I’m going to Arvind. He has the antidote. If there’s any humanity left in him, he’ll hand it over. Stay here and keep Ritika under lock and key.”
Kavita nods, her eyes filled with concern as Rohan rushes out.
At the jail, Rohan storms into Arvind’s cell. Arvind sits on the bench, unbothered, staring blankly at the wall.
Rohan: (firmly) “Arvind, we need to talk. Sanjana is dying. The poison has spread through her body. If she doesn’t get the antidote, she won’t make it.”
Arvind: (coldly) “And why should I care? She was part of the team that betrayed me.”
Rohan: (snapping) “No, she wasn’t! Ritika admitted it. Sanjana refused to be part of the experiments. She’s innocent. Just like those five women you killed!”
Arvind: (glaring) “Lies. Ritika is trying to manipulate you. They were all part of it. They knew what they were doing.”
Rohan: (stepping closer, his tone desperate yet steady) “No, they didn’t! Ritika lied to them. She told them it was medical research, that they were helping children. They didn’t know the truth about the experiments or their dangers.”
Arvind: (scoffing) “Why should I believe you?”
Rohan: (with conviction) “Because I have proof. Ritika confessed everything—how she deceived them, how Sanjana refused to be involved. Those women weren’t your enemies, Arvind. They were victims, just like your daughter.”
Arvind’s expression shifts slightly, a flicker of doubt and guilt crossing his face.
Rohan: (softening) “You’ve already taken five innocent lives. Don’t let Sanjana’s life be on your conscience too. You can’t bring back your daughter or undo what’s happened, but you can save Sanjana. Please, tell me where the antidote is.”
Arvind lowers his head, his fists clenching. After a long pause, he sighs heavily.
Arvind: (quietly) “The antidote is in my lab. In the locked cabinet to the left of the main workstation. The code is 2487.”
Rohan: (relieved) “Thank you, Arvind. You made the right choice.”
Rohan rushes out, dialing Kavita to coordinate retrieving the antidote, while Arvind sits back, lost in the weight of his actions.
Scene 4: A Crucial Witness
The soft beeping of medical equipment fills the hospital room as Sanjana lies on the bed, her face pale but visibly recovering. Rohan enters, carrying a small notebook and pen. Sanjana looks up, offering a faint smile of gratitude.
Rohan: (gently) “It’s good to see you better, Sanjana. How are you feeling?”
Sanjana: (weakly) “Better, thanks to you and your team. I heard… you got the antidote just in time. Thank you, Inspector.”
Rohan: (sincerely) “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just glad we could save you. But Sanjana, I need your help.”
Sanjana nods slightly, adjusting herself to sit upright.
Sanjana: “Anything I can do, Inspector. After everything I’ve been through, I want to help stop them.”
Rohan: (leaning forward) “I need you to confirm some things about Ritika and her experiments. We’re building a strong case, but your testimony could make all the difference.”
Sanjana: (with determination) “I’ll tell you everything I know. What do you need to know?”
Rohan: “Ritika admitted that she and her boyfriend used Arvind’s lab for their experiments. She also said she misled her team into believing it was for a good cause. Is that true?”
Sanjana: (nodding) “Yes, it’s true. Ritika approached me first, asking if I wanted to join. She said it was medical research to help sick children. But something about it felt off. When I asked too many questions, she got defensive. That’s when I refused to be part of it.”
Rohan: “Did you know about the others—Priya, Neha, Pooja, and Maya? Were they aware of the truth?”
Sanjana: (shaking her head) “No, they had no idea. Ritika was very convincing. She made it seem like a noble cause. But I heard whispers—things she didn’t want us to know. That’s why I kept my distance.”
Rohan: “And her boyfriend? Did you ever meet him?”
Sanjana: (hesitating) “Once. He came to the lab when I was there briefly. He was… intimidating. The way he talked, the way he looked at people—it felt like he was hiding something. I overheard him mention ‘pushing boundaries’ and ‘taking risks.’ That’s when I knew I made the right choice not to get involved.”
Rohan: (noting it down) “Your testimony will be vital, Sanjana. You’ll need to confirm all this in court. Are you ready for that?”
Sanjana: (firmly) “Yes. If it means stopping Ritika and her boyfriend, and if it helps bring justice for those women Arvind killed, I’ll do it.”
Rohan: (smiling) “You’re brave, Sanjana. I know this isn’t easy, but you’re making a difference. We’ll make sure you’re protected.”
Sanjana looks relieved, her strength returning as she nods at Rohan. He stands to leave, but turns back one last time.
Rohan: (gently) “Rest up. You’ve been through a lot. And thank you again—for everything.”
Sanjana: (smiling faintly) “No, Inspector. Thank you for believing in me.”
Rohan leaves the room, his determination renewed. Sanjana’s testimony would be the cornerstone of the case, and he was one step closer to bringing Ritika and her boyfriend to justice.
