If you’re anything like me, your Monday afternoon was going just fine—until that emergency alert blared from every phone in the house. You know the one. That heart-stopping sound that always seems to happen right when you’re halfway through packing a lunchbox for the next day. Suddenly, the plans have changed. The news is official: Distance online Learning is back across the UAE from Tuesday, May 5, to Friday, May 8, 2026.
As a mom of a Year 2 student, let’s just take a collective minute to process the “surprise” guest in our living rooms this morning.
The Year 2 Reality: “Mom, where’s my login?” 🧸
At this age, they are old enough to know how the laptop works, but young enough to still need us for everything.
- The Conflict: Trying to keep a 6 or 7-year-old focused on a screen while the cat walks across the keyboard or a sibling is playing nearby.
- The Technical Support: I am currently a full-time IT consultant, a teacher’s assistant, and a snack-coordinator all at once.
- The “Mute” Struggle: Why is it that the moment the teacher asks a question, my kid forgets where the microphone button is, but knows exactly how to change their Zoom background to outer space?

I’ll be honest—it’s a lot to juggle, especially if you’re also trying to work from home. But when the security alerts came through yesterday about the intercepted threats, my “annoyance” immediately turned into gratitude.
Yes, my dining table is now a classroom. Yes, I’m on my third cup of coffee. But my child is safe. In the UAE, the authorities don’t take chances with our kids. Moving schools and universities online for these few days is a massive effort to ensure that the only thing our children have to worry about is their spelling list, not what’s happening outside.
Survival Tips for the Year 2 “Zoom-Room” 📋
From one tired parent to another, here is my sanity plan for the week:
- The Schedule is King: Stick to the school’s timetable as much as possible. It keeps them in “school mode” and prevents the day from turning into a four-day weekend.
- The Re-Assessment Date: Mark Friday, May 8 on your calendar. That’s when the authorities will tell us if we’re heading back to the classroom on Monday.
- Give Yourself Grace: If the math worksheet didn’t get finished because the Wi-Fi cut out, it’s okay. We are doing our best.
The Moral: Resilience is a Family Value 🇦🇪
We’ve done this before, and we can do it again. We live in a country that can pivot to “Digital Mode” in a heartbeat to keep us out of harm’s way.
