Episode 6: The Clock is Ticking
Scene 1: A Breakthrough
The next morning, Rohan was back in his office, staring at the evidence board, the names of the victims connected by red lines. His phone buzzed—it was Rajesh from the cybercrime team.
“Sir, we’ve got something,” Rajesh’s voice came through with a hint of excitement.
Rohan grabbed his coat, heading straight to the cybercrime unit. When he arrived, the room was buzzing with activity. Rajesh motioned him over to his workstation, eyes fixed on his screen.
“What have you got?” Rohan asked, leaning over the desk.
Rajesh pointed to the screen. “We traced several cryptocurrency transactions that match the profile of illegal chemical trades. They lead us to a suspicious account that’s linked to a shell company operating out of Kenya. The company’s been flagged for smuggling Tetrodotoxin and other banned substances into different countries.”
Rohan’s jaw tightened. “Kenya… makes sense. What else?”
“We tracked the shipping records,” Rajesh continued. “There’s a container that arrived at the docks here two weeks ago. The cargo was declared as medical supplies, but the weight didn’t match the contents listed. It was released and delivered to a warehouse near the outskirts of the city.”
Rohan’s mind raced. “That could be our supply point. Is the warehouse under surveillance?”
Rajesh nodded. “Already in place. We’ve alerted local units to keep watch. No movement yet, but if this is where the killer is getting the chemical, they might return soon.”
Rohan stood up straight, his determination clear. “Good work, Rajesh. This could be the break we need.”
Scene 2: A Deadly Countdown
Later that evening, Rohan received a call from Dr. Meera, her voice tense.
“Rohan, I’ve completed the tests on the previous victims’ blood samples as well,” she began. “And they all show traces of Tetrodotoxin, the same chemical we found in the most recent victim.”
Rohan straightened up, sensing something important. “So, the killer used the same toxin on all of them?”
Meera sighed, her voice heavy with concern. “Yes, but here’s the disturbing part—the dosages are all over the place. Some victims had a lot of the chemical in their system, while others had much less. It’s almost like he’s… experimenting.”
Rohan frowned, his mind racing. “Experimenting? What do you mean?”
“The doses weren’t consistent,” Meera explained. “In some victims, the toxin worked slowly, paralyzing them over days, while in others, it acted much faster. He’s not just killing them—he’s testing different amounts, seeing how much it takes to break them.”
Rohan clenched his fists. “So he’s adjusting the dosage based on the person, seeing how much they can take before they die? This guy is playing with their lives.”
Meera’s voice softened. “That’s exactly what it looks like. The marks on their skin? Those are reactions to the toxin, but the intensity varies depending on how much was used. It’s like he’s trying to figure out the perfect balance.”
Rohan’s expression darkened. “He’s importing a banned chemical just to torture his victims… This isn’t just murder—it’s a twisted experiment. He’s treating them like lab rats.”
Meera’s voice softened. “Rohan, we’re doing everything we can. But this toxin isn’t something we deal with often. It’s rare, and the signs are easy to miss until it’s too late.”
“Thanks, Meera,” Rohan said, determination in his voice. “This might be our way to catch him before he strikes again.”
“Just be careful, Rohan,” Meera warned. “This man is dangerous, and he’s getting more calculated with every move.”
Rohan hung up the phone, his mind racing. This wasn’t just a serial killer—they were dealing with a methodical, calculating mastermind. And now, with the knowledge of the chemical, they had a new lead.
Scene 3: The Warehouse Raid
The next day, Rohan stood with Karan and a team of officers outside the warehouse identified by the cybercrime team. The sun was setting, casting long shadows over the industrial area.
Karan adjusted his earpiece. “The surveillance team says there’s been no activity inside. Could be a dead end.”
Rohan’s eyes scanned the surroundings. “No, he’s smart. He wouldn’t just leave it unguarded. Something’s here, we just need to find it.”
They moved cautiously toward the building, weapons ready. The warehouse was old, the paint peeling from the metal doors. Rohan signaled for the team to move in.
They entered the warehouse, and the air inside was stale, filled with the scent of chemicals and dust. Stacks of crates lined the walls, each marked with labels that didn’t match their contents. Rohan’s eyes narrowed—this was definitely the place.
Karan moved toward one of the crates, prying it open. Inside were vials of a strange liquid, carefully packaged.
“This must be it,” Karan muttered, holding up one of the vials.
Rohan examined it closely. “That’s the Tetrodoxin. We’ve found the supply.”
Suddenly, a sound echoed from the back of the warehouse—a metallic clatter. Rohan and Karan spun around, guns raised.
“Who’s there?” Rohan called out, his voice firm.
A figure emerged from the shadows, sprinting toward the back exit.
“Go!” Rohan shouted, chasing after the figure.
They bolted through the maze of crates, the figure always just a step ahead. As they reached the exit, the figure darted into the alleyway behind the warehouse.
Rohan followed, adrenaline pumping through his veins. He could hear Karan behind him, but the figure was fast, slipping through the narrow alleys like a ghost.
Finally, they emerged into an open lot, but the figure had vanished into the night.
Rohan stopped, panting, frustration boiling over. “Damn it! He got away.”
Karan caught up, equally winded. “Sir… what now?”
Rohan stared into the darkness, his mind racing. “We keep pushing. He’s running, but he’s getting desperate. We’re close, Karan. We’re closer than we’ve ever been.”
Karan nodded. “We’ll get him, sir. We’re not letting him slip through our fingers.”
Rohan’s jaw tightened as he looked back at the warehouse. The Silent Shadow was slipping, and they were closing in. But how many more would die before they could catch him?
Scene 4: The Next Target
Next Day, As they worked through the files, trying to piece together Saxena’s whereabouts, another call came in. This time, it wasn’t from the killer—it was from a terrified woman.
“Inspector Malik?” the voice on the other end trembled. “I—I think someone’s watching me. I’ve seen a man outside my window, just standing there…”
Rohan’s heart skipped a beat. “Who is this? Where are you?”
“My name is Ritika. I—I used to volunteer at Hope Haven a few years ago. I heard about the murders, and now… I’m scared. Please, help me.”
Rohan exchanged a glance with Karan. “Ritika, stay inside. Lock your doors and windows. We’re on our way.”
As he hung up, the tension in the room was palpable. “She’s the next target,” Rohan said grimly. “He’s already watching her.”
Karan grabbed his coat. “We can’t lose another one, sir.”
Rohan nodded. “Let’s move.”
