Episode 2: Raat Ke Khayal
Scene 1: The Morning Tease
(It’s a bright and peaceful morning. Sunlight streams through the window as Sara stands in front of the mirror, gently brushing her hair. She’s lost in thought, her mind wandering back to the engagement ceremony and Ali’s lingering gaze from the night before. Zoya, ever observant and playful, catches her sister’s distracted mood.)
Zoya (teasing, with a mischievous smile):
“Lagta hai, Apa raat ke khayal abhi bhi tumhe sata rahe hain. Woh Ali ka chehra ab tak yaad hai, haina?”
(Sis, looks like the thoughts of last night are still haunting you. You’re still thinking about Ali, aren’t you?)
Sara (pretending to be unaffected, her cheeks warming):
“Nahi, aisa kuch nahi hai. Tum bhi na, bas baat ko bada bana deti ho.”
(No, it’s nothing like that. You always make such a big deal out of everything.)
Zoya (grinning, leaning against the door frame):
“Haan, haan. Waise hi tumhe kal raat se chup si lagi hai. Chehra dekh kar toh lagta hai sapnon mein kho gayi thi!”
(Yeah, right. You’ve been unusually quiet since last night. By the looks of it, you’ve been lost in your dreams!)
Sara (sighing, shaking her head with a smile):
“Zoya, tum bhi na… sapne waqar nahi. Main bas thoda thaki hui thi.”
(Zoya, stop… it’s not about dreams. I was just a little tired.)
Zoya (giggling, enjoying Sara’s slight embarrassment):
“Tumhari aankhon mein toh bilkul likha hua tha, ‘kisi ne mujhe dekha hai’… aur wo ‘koi’ kaun tha?”
(Your eyes were saying it all, ‘someone noticed me’… and who was that ‘someone’?)
Sara (blushing, trying to hide her smile as she adjusts her dupatta):
“Kya farq padta hai, kaun dekh raha tha? Tum itna kuch kyun sochti ho?”
(What difference does it make who was looking? Why do you think about it so much?)
Zoya (winking, full of energy as she teases more):
“Farq toh padta hai, jab ek itni pyari si Apa ko Ali jaisa ladka itne dhyaan se dekh raha ho. Waise, unhone tumhari taraf kitne lambe waqt tak dekha tha, note kiya?”
(It does make a difference when a guy like Ali is looking so intently at my lovely sister. By the way, did you notice how long he was watching you?)
Sara (rolling her eyes, but smiling as she ties her hair):
“Zoya, tumhe Ali ke ilawa koi aur baat nahi soojhti? Itna bhi kuch khaas nahi tha.”
(Zoya, is Ali all you can think about? There wasn’t anything that special.)
Zoya (crossing her arms, raising an eyebrow playfully):
“Achha? Toh phir kal raat tumhare wo chhupke chhupke waali muskurahat kaisi thi? Jab tumhare aur Ali ke haath mithai ke table pe touch hue the.”
(Oh really? Then what about that secret little smile you had last night? When your hands touched at the dessert table?)
Sara (giggling now, but trying to maintain her composure):
“Zoya, woh bas ek coincidence tha. Tum bekaar hi itna sochti ho.”
(Zoya, that was just a coincidence. You’re overthinking it.)
Zoya (playfully nudging her):
“Coincidence? Ya phir destiny ka ek aur signal? Apa, maano ya na maano, kuch toh zaroor hai.”
(Coincidence? Or another sign of destiny? Sis, whether you admit it or not, there’s definitely something there.)
Sara (blushing deeper, avoiding eye contact as she grabs her bag):
“Tumhare sapnon ke alawa kuch aur bhi hota hai, Zoya!”
(There’s more to life than your dreams, Zoya!)
Zoya (laughing, running her fingers through her hair dramatically):
“Apni Apa ki sharmili si muskurahat aur us Ali ki dekhti hui aankhen, yeh toh ek classic love story shuru ho rahi hai!”
(My shy sister’s little smile and Ali’s longing gaze, this is the beginning of a classic love story!)
Sara (shaking her head, laughing despite herself):
“Zoya, tumse baat karna hi bekaar hai. Chalo, der ho rahi hai, university jaana hai.”
(Zoya, talking to you is pointless. Come on, we’re getting late, we need to leave for university.)
Zoya (smiling cheekily as she grabs her bag, still teasing):
“Thik hai, Apa. Magar ek baat yaad rakhna, tumhari kahani ab shuru hui hai.”
(Alright, sis. But just remember, your story has just begun.)
(Sara smiles and rolls her eyes, trying to brush off Zoya’s teasing, but deep down, the thoughts of Ali from last night still linger in her mind as they head out for university.)
Scene 2: A Mother’s Observation
(The next morning at Ali’s home, his mother is preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Ali enters the dining room, his eyes a little red from a restless night, his mind replaying the moments with Sara. Danish is already seated, helping himself to breakfast. Ali’s mother, ever observant, immediately notices his tired look.)
Ali’s Mother (frowning slightly, concerned):
“Kya baat hai, Ali? Raat ko theek se soye nahi kya? Aankhein toh bilkul laal ho rahi hain.”
(What’s the matter, Ali? Didn’t you sleep well last night? Your eyes are completely red.)
(Before Ali can answer, Danish, always ready with a joke, jumps in with a playful grin.)
Danish (teasingly, nudging Ali):
“Haan, aunty, lagta hai kisi ke chehre ne inhein raat bhar sone nahi diya.”
(Yes, aunty, looks like someone’s face kept him awake all night.)
(Ali shoots Danish a sharp look, elbowing him under the table.)
Ali (in a low, embarrassed voice):
“Danish, chup kar!”
(Danish, shut up!)
(Danish chuckles, but Ali’s mother catches onto the hint. She looks at Ali meaningfully, a knowing smile playing on her lips.)
Ali’s Mother (smirking softly):
“Hmm… dekha tha kal raat ko maine. Main sab samajh gayi hoon.”
(Hmm… I saw it last night. I understand everything.)
(Ali, now blushing, avoids eye contact as he tries to deflect her comment.)
Ali (rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly):
“Kya maa, aisa kuch nahi hai. Aap bhi Danish ki baatein mat suna karein. Main bas thoda late ho gaya tha, is liye neend kam hui.”
(Come on, Mom, it’s nothing like that. Don’t listen to Danish. I was just up late, that’s why I didn’t get much sleep.)
(His mother gives him a knowing look, her smile widening.)
Ali’s Mother (playfully):
“Janti hoon, janti hoon. Par nashta toh kar lo pehle, bina khaye kaise jaoge?”
(I know, I know. But at least have breakfast first, how will you go without eating?)
(Ali, still embarrassed and trying to escape the situation, stands up quickly, grabbing his bag.)
Ali (in a hurried tone):
“Mujhe der ho rahi hai, maa. Baad mein khana khata hoon.”
(I’m getting late, Mom. I’ll eat later.)
(Without waiting for a response, Ali rushes out of the house, leaving his mother shaking her head, amused. Danish, who’s been watching the whole exchange with a grin, bursts out laughing as Ali leaves.)
Danish (chuckling, watching Ali leave):
“Haan bhai, ab yeh toh roz ka hai! Iska haal ab mai samajh gaya hoon.”
(Well, this is going to be a daily thing! I completely understand his situation now.)
Ali’s Mother (smiling, watching Ali rush out the door):
“Is baar Danish bilkul sahi keh raha hai.”
(This time, Danish is absolutely right.)
(She shakes her head knowingly as Danish continues to laugh, both fully aware of what’s really keeping Ali awake.)
(It’s early afternoon, and Sara and Zoya are sitting in a cozy little cafeteria near their university. The atmosphere is light, with students chatting around them. Sara is busy eating her sandwich, while Zoya, always observant, looks around. Suddenly, her eyes catch someone familiar.)
Zoya (teasingly, her eyes widening with excitement):
“Arre dekho toh, Apa! Mujhe kon nazar aya hai!”
(Look, sis! Guess who I just saw!)
(Sara, too focused on her sandwich, barely looks up.)
Sara (casually, still chewing her sandwich):
“Kya hai, Zoya? Tum har waqt kisi na kisi ko dekhti rehti ho.”
(What is it, Zoya? You’re always spotting someone or the other.)
Zoya (grinning, nudging Sara):
“Nahi, nahi, is baar kuch special hai! Upar dekho, jaldi!”
(No, no, this time it’s something special! Look up, quickly!)
(Sara, finally curious, looks up. Her eyes land on none other than Ali, walking across the cafeteria. Her heart skips a beat, and she freezes for a second, pleasantly shocked.)
Sara (in surprise, whispering):
“Arre… yeh yahaan kaise agaya?”
(Wait… how did he get here?)
(Zoya, noticing the change in Sara’s expression, smirks knowingly.)
Zoya (giggling):
“Kaise bhi aaya ho, lekin dekhne wala hai na? Tumhare chehre ka rang bilkul badal gaya, Apa!”
(It doesn’t matter how he got here, the real thing to see is your face! Your expression just changed completely, sis!)
Sara (flustered, trying to hide her emotions as she watches Ali walk towards them):
“Zoya, chup kar! Waise bhi… yeh toh seedha yahin aa raha hai!”
(Zoya, be quiet! And anyway… he’s coming straight over here!)
(Zoya grins wider as she watches Ali approach their table. Sara feels her heart race a little, unsure of what to say or do. Ali, on the other hand, has also spotted them and is walking confidently toward them, a soft smile on his face.)
Zoya (teasing, whispering to Sara):
“Kya scene hai, Apa! Tumhari love story toh yahin se start ho rahi hai!”
(This is a moment, sis! Your love story is starting right here!)
Sara (blushing, whispering back, still flustered):
“Zoya, chup kar warna main yahan se uth jaungi!”
(Zoya, shut up or I’m leaving right now!)
(Before Sara can react further, Ali reaches their table, giving a polite nod to both sisters. His eyes linger a little longer on Sara, making her heart flutter, while Zoya watches with a mischievous grin.)
Ali (smiling politely):
“As-salaam alaikum. Tum dono ko yahan dekh kar acha laga.”
(Hello. It’s nice to see you both here.
